Pipe Box -
circa early 1770's
This reproduction was created from an original found in
Cumberland county, Pennsylvania. Found in most taverns and inns in
Colonial America, the establishments would store the pipes, usually made
of clay in the top compartment and the tobacco was stored in the drawer. If a
patron wished for a complimentary smoke he could avail himself and then would
replace the pipe. The next user would then break off a small bit of the long
stem to insure himself of a clean bit. Measures approximately
16.5" tall x 4.5 inches wide x 4.5 inch
deep.
